Ikegami Honmonji Temple is the head temple of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism in Tokyo. Its vast grounds feature a five-storied pagoda and a treasure pagoda, both designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The “Oe-shiki” is a grand memorial service celebrating the anniversary of Nichiren’s death. Held every October, the festival is an emotional celebration enveloped in a solemn and fantastical atmosphere, with approximately 1,000 lanterns illuminating the temple grounds.
