Shinjuku’s Golden Gai is a unique and charming area where you can experience old-school Tokyo nightlife. It’s a maze of tiny alleyways filled with over 200 incredibly small bars, each with its own unique theme and personality. You might find a bar with a film director as the master, or one dedicated entirely to punk rock, or perhaps a cozy spot with vintage jazz playing. The bars are often so small that they only seat 5 to 8 people at a time, creating a very intimate and friendly atmosphere. It’s a great place to meet locals and have a one-of-a-kind drink and chat. It feels like stepping back in time to the 1960s or 70s, with its narrow, wooden buildings and retro vibe.
